Sunday Funday - Anthony Carmen Challenge Results Week 4

It's that time of the week again! My illustrations are here! I got really amazing challenges this week, and I'm pretty happy with my designs as a reflection! Hope I didn't let you guys down!

~-~

I loved this challenge a lot! I love the avant garde and dramatics because there really is no limit. Because it is such a broad area, I feel a designer really needs to be careful and not go completely overboard. My inspiration was clearly from the Red Planet and the idea of moving through space. I wanted to stay true to my love of structure and blocking, but still keep it interesting and creative. I'm pretty in love with this look. I like the deconstruction of a structured look, but still maintaining a fun shape. Does it read space and Mars? Not directly - but the inspiration was all there!

This is my first challenge of this kind and I love the idea! I'm often inspired by a single fabric or color - so presenting me with swatches and saying have fun was great! This one was inspired by the colors and image of peacock feathers along with my excitement for my draping class that I'll be starting in a week! I love the idea of taking a bunch of colored fabrics and manipulating them into something beautiful. My idea sewing a bunch of fabrics together and bunching and turning them to create a structured and gorgeous shape! I think this is interesting and really pretty. Very happy with it!

Love this challenge! So immediately when I saw garden party, I thought of an old illustration I did for some fabrics I own. I thought a fun take would be creating a menswear outfit for her pattern to attend the party with her. I started with that similar print and created a formal look. The undersized blazer is a take on a vest and blazer combo. I like the extra peek at the undershirt on the bottom - adding more color. The charcoal gray seems lighter than solid black, so I think it's a decent match - though white may have been better for the blazer with black and white pants. You live and you learn and you play!

Hope you like these looks! And send me more for next week, as always!

Which is your favorite?

This is my first post from my phone - and it's difficult! So, I'll cut it short! :)

Sunday Funday - Anthony Carmen Challenge Results Week 3

I know I'm late, but it's still Sunday! That means, it's time for a little personal work!

So what challenges did I get this week?

~-~

Toggle Loose Poncho, Black Side Zip Pants

Puffed Aqua Collared Shirt, Opened Black Side Zip Pants

I loved the idea of a woman leaving from Ireland to go on a little trip to Spain! So I envisioned her getting on the plane in the cold, rainy weather, and getting off to sunny skies!

I thought of the woman in a poncho, coming into the airport from the rain, with versatile pants that suited both types of weather. I think the side zip idea is fun because you can do a lot with it - stopping at the knee, you can leave the zipper anywhere in-between there and the ankle. She'll probably change when this gets to her hotel, but this is a good weather changing outfit for the travel!

Now I have never even thought of athletic wear, so I was a little apprehensive with this one...but I like a challenge! I'm all about gaudy at the Olympics! You're there to represent your country, so I think you should really show off who you're playing for! I think white is classic and fitting for the Olympics, so I wanted to design around it. I wanted it to look cool from the side, so I decided to play with stripes on the sleeves and then put blue starred print along the side of the pant. It's classic and clean from the front, and bold and fun from the side - and I think it shows the fun and respect of the Olympics! (But I probably still won't ever think about athletic wear after this!)

What did you think of this week's looks? What would you like me to do for next week?

As always, I'm going to beg for new challenges! Send some of your own, or ask a friend for a good one! ;)

Twofer Tuesday - Anthony Carmen Challenge Results Week 2

For Twofer Tuesday, I decided I'd give you two design challenges since I missed out on Sunday!

~-~

Pretty fitting for Twofer Tuesday, no? I decided a tank and shorts with options. You can tie up the sleeves of the tank for summer, or take them down if it's a bit chilly. Also, the simple shorts have a draw string, so they can hit anywhere you want on the leg. I thought the pop of bold blue and lavender with muted colors and simple design might look good together.

A gown for the red carpet? Where to start! Unsure where I thought up this design. My inspiration started when emerald popped into my head paired with red hair. I thought this was a cool take on my design aesthetic of color blocking. Golden tulle over half of an emerald dress? I kind of love this one! Cinching it in the waist allows the tulle to move without too much freedom.

I NEED MORE DESIGN CHALLENGES!

Alright guys, send me your best! I'd like to keep doing this, so the more challenges I get, the more I can play around! Let me know if you have anything for me, please! :)

Sunday Funday - Anthony Carmen Challenge Results Week 1

So, it's my first challenge results post! I'm a little nervous for the criticism, but I can take it!

I chose 3 challenge ideas and came up with original designs. I wouldn't say they are my best, but I think I did a good enough job for my first post!

So, here they are in no particular order!

~-~

I love this challenge because, honestly, I've never tried a plus size design! I know a lot of what I do would look good on all sizes, but I never specifically think about the plus size clientele, so this was a really great challenge to tap into that way of thinking!

To me, a nice black fitted blazer looks great on everybody (and I love contrast cuffs!) I also love smart color blocking, so I designed this purple/white blocked knee length dress. White can be unforgiving, but I think contrasting with the entire outfit, it will make everything look slimmer, sexy, and fun! I also threw in a belt to cinch the waist, and a matching bag (because I love matching accessories!) I hope you'd wear this over at Haute Curvy Woman !

You should know I'm a huge Gaga fan, so when I saw this challenge, I died a little. A bit morbid, but a BRILLIANT idea! So, I decided Gaga was going to be a demure version of herself at a funeral. I came up with an angel of death concept, so I incorporated black and white (which I love contrasted together). A sleek mandarin collared straight dress with white trim and oversized puff sleeves. I also thought she'd carrying rosary beads and wear a beehive head veil for dramatics. A perfectly demure, yet dramatic look to respect the dead, but still be Gaga!

PS, check out Rivalation! : It's a student competition website that gives monetary prizes out! Maybe I should enter?

~-~

Of course I was up for the challenge! It's always fun to look at random things and come up with a complete look from it! I didn't choose ANY purse though, I took @altliae up on her offer while using one of her super cool purses on her Etsy!

(Isn't the shape great? I'm a geometric-ophile...)

I came up with this fall number. I incorporated a brown leather choker blazer with size panel and knee padded white pants! (Is white acceptable in any way in the fall? I say, why not!) This is probably my favorite design of the challenges! The colors work together so well and earth tones are really appealing to me these days! I also tried to match the circular geometric theme with softer lines all around.

Oh, and I used micron pens, colored pencils, and markers for each of these in my 11 x 14 sketch pad! Just in case you were wondering!

SO WHAT'S NEXT? :::

Let's continue this! I'll keep choosing 3 design ideas a week (if you already submitted, I will use that idea at a later date)! I love the illustration and design concept practice, and I hope that I get better as this process continues!

So, how did I do?

Sunday Funday - Anthony Carmen Designs

Happy Sunday Funday, everyone! So, Sundays are all about doing whatever we want. As much as I love posting about the style and fashion items from other places for inspiration, I need to remember that I'm a fashion DESIGN student! It's about time that I incorporate some of my own designs into Anthony & Elle!

Back in 2010, I decided to teach myself to sew in preparation for fashion school (this all while finishing up my Bachelors in Biology.. Weird?) Luckily, I documented some of that on another blog so, why don't you go check out some of my old projects that I did while learning to sew HERE!

Anyway, I want to challenge myself with new projects, so that's where I need YOUR help! I was thinking of starting out with illustrations first, and perhaps move into sewing if time permits?

I get inspiration in many ways; such as just by looking at fabrics. Check out a little illustration project I did based on the bolts of floral fabrics I have and summer:

So what is this all about?

I WANT YOUR HELP!

Give me challenges! It could be pictures of fabrics, pictures of inspiration, it can be a word, it can be a paragraph, anything you feel fit! It can be as simple as "Fire" or difficult as "You're stuck in a room with this piece of fabric [picture] and a sewing machine, what would you make?"

I primarily do menswear and women's apparel, but I'm up for trying anything! So specify all you want!

I think it would be awesome to test myself in situations and get people involved in our blog with my own designs! Plus it gives me great practice in making my illustrations better. I'll try to do as many as I can, and depending on how many challenges I get, I will pick the best ones to show everyone! If I REALLY like it and have the means to make it, I will try!

So please, test my skills, I'm up for the challenge! Be creative and have fun! I'm looking to do this every Sunday if it's successful and I'll show the results then too!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

A.Carmen
