Freaky Friday- Pierre Dal Corso Photography

Photography, whether specifically fashion photography or not, is artistic in a way that is so similar to the way fashion is artistic.  Photos capture a mood like an outfit or a designer's collection captures a mood.  Photos use color, texture, and layers to create something interesting to look at just like fashion does.  And when photography is specified for fashion, the two mediums compliment one another perfectly.

Pierre Dal Corso takes some fantastic conceptual fashion shots, but many of his images are not rooted in fashion.  His aesthetic is completely signature in it's haunting, thought-provoking, and moody complexity.  Corso uses black-and-white beautifully, as do many other photographers who embrace the weird and sometimes scary concepts- but his colored pictures are just as freaky as his black-and-whites.

Check them out:

Some of these would have no place in any traditional magazine, but they're all memorizing. The pictures that would disturb the masses are particularly interesting to me! I'd love to hear his thoughts as he's imagining the concept for a photo-shoot. Great artists like this have to be a little strange, but the oddities are what make the images great!

Freaky Friday- Edgy Editorial Inspiration by Greg Kadel

Fashion editorial photography is a unique art form, and perhaps one of the most difficult forms of art to master.  Although fashion editorial photographers have a great deal of artistic freedom, their ultimate goal is to sell clothing to a particular audience. If the clothing doesn't look good in the photograph, the pictures are not useable.  The audience can't just be interested in the pictures, the audience must want to buy the clothing featured in them.

Greg Kadel has mastered the editorial.  His pictures are inspirational and interesting, but still sell the clothing.  The images are moody and even a little scary, but you can't take your eyes away from them. He aims for shock, and ends up engaging us and pulling us in.

Some of these pictures are downright creepy. But even when incorporating the creep-factor, we still don't lose sight of the beauty.  Although his style is avaunt-Gard, Kadel focuses on making the clothing (and the girl wearing the clothing) look desirable.

This photographer manages to pull emotions out of models in a way that I've never seen before. I can feel the angst, feel the passion. The clothes are accented by the emotion emoted through the model and captured by the photographer.

Many of Kadel's photographs are in black and white.  When he uses color he does it very subtly and very deliberately.  These touches of color add to the mood of the piece, shifting the mood at times from totally edgy to slightly feminine.

These photographs belong to Greg Kadel Studios and associated magazines.

Which photograph is your favorite, and how does it speak to you?

Celeb Saturday- Top 10 Models of the Moment

I found a list of the top models of the present on models.com, and I don't think a lot of introductory text is necessary. These gorgeous ladies displayed in artistic editorial spreads and ad campaigns don't need a lot of description. Some people say that modeling (and admiring models and the pictures they pose for) is vain and frivolous. I however, think that their beauty and artistic inclinations are admirable and perfect for Celeb Saturday.

The end. Here's the count-down:

Celeb Saturday - Terry Richardson

I'm a big fan of celebrity photography, and a big fan of Terry Richardson's easy, often backgroundless photographs that just show the beauty of celebrities and just let them play with the camera. As a fan of Andy Warhol, I just love looking at people, and the rawness of the camera: that's why I'm spotlighting Terry's Diary and some of his great photos for Celeb Saturday!

So, as I was paging through Terry's photographs, I noticed these great shots from a recent trip to Japan with Lady Gaga, and fell in love! Look at the amazing fashion and from the trip and the amazing shots Terry got of Gaga!
