Celeb Saturday- Best Recent On-Screen Fashion Moments

From the big screen to the small one, costuming is an important part of the cinema. Both Anthony and I are passionate about the importance of on-screen fashion. And many of Hollywood's favorite ladies have had some wonderful fashion moments on-screen.  Whether the film or TV show be a period drama or a modern sitcom, I've found some stunning screen grabs of costuming at it's best.

In some of these pictures the actress's personal style shines through, and in other pictures her character is wearing an outfit completely different than what the actress would wear on the street. But in every picture the costuming makes a statement within the movie that both allows the actress to stand out, and helps the movie to make sense.

Vanessa Hudgens in Sucker Punch
This movie wasn't a big hit, but the film's costuming was visually stunning. I especially love Vanessa's ensemble here. The big Bardot-esque hair and all-neutral lingerie is very glamorous, but not obviously so.

Zooey Deschanel in 500 Days of Summer

Emmy Rossum in The Phantom of the Opera

Dakota Fanning in The Runaways
I love this blouse and KILLER boots. I'd wear this ensemble today, even though the movie is set in the 1970's.

 Natalie Portman in Black Swan

Blake Lively on the set of Gossip Girl

 Kirsten Dunst in Marie Antoinette

The Cast of Pretty Little Liars

Keira Knightley in Pride and Prejudice
Keira's character in the movie is of the middle class. But these long dresses with long jackets look so effortlessly fashionable to me today (although her character wasn't of the "fashionable" society then).

After choosing these pictures, I realized that most of these come from movies I really enjoy. Perhaps I enjoy these movies so much because of the beautiful ladies in beautiful costumes that star in them. Who doesn't like to look at something (or someone) pretty?

  1. It's so true! I tend to like movies more just because they're pretty to look at. Oh well, I'm visual!

  2. Ah! I loved the costumes in "Pride & Prejduice"! Jacqueline Durran also created the fantastic and memorable "green dress" from "Atonement":

And posting about the film fashion of Milena Canonero ("Marie Antoinette") would be an interesting retrospective. She won an Oscar for her work in Kubrick's 1975 "Barry Lyndon"--where she used a combination of actual vintage 1700s clothing and textiles to create the costumes. Awarding costumes in period pieces is often criticized because it's so 'easy' compared to doing memorable costuming for contemporary (non-fantasy) films... but Canonero has done some great modern costuming for Wes Anderson (e.g., "The Life Aquatic"):
